“At Girls Inc. of Dothan, our mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold – one girl at a time.”
It is day eight of our 2018 Outreach Weeks! It has been so much fun to look at different non-profits, and organizations throughout the Wiregrass. Our hope is that through this process, your eyes have been opened to different organizations and various needs throughout our community. Today we are going to shine a spotlight on a very special organization – Girls Incorporated.
About Girls Inc.
This organization is not just limited to Dothan, AL. There are many Girls Inc. centers across the country. Girls Inc. was founded in 1864 to serve girls and young women who were experiencing upheaval in the aftermath of the Civil War. Across the decades, Girls Inc. adapted to meet the specific environmental challenges facing girls and young women, and always working in partnership with schools and communities. Girls Inc. is also guided by their founders’ fundamental belief in the inherent potential of each girl. Woven into those early girls’ clubs are the same core values of Girls Inc. today: the importance of creating a safe gathering place for girls to learn and to share in a sisterhood and a strong premise that each girl can develop her own capacities, self- confidence, and grow up healthy, educated, and independent.
Girls Inc. offers two different programs – a summer program and an after school program. Girls Incorporated of Dothan’s Summer program is an 8-week program. Registration typically begins the week of Spring Break. Slots are filled on a first come, first paid basis. Children that are 5 years old as of December 31st of the previous year and girls that just completed the 8th grade during the current school year are eligible to attend. During the summer, girls engage in various activities and trips. Girls Incorporated of Dothan’s After School Program is designed for girls in grades K-8th. It provides girls with engaging and rich educational experiences to help them become more productive, intelligent, and confident young women. Homework assistance and tutoring are also provided to girls that need extra help in math and reading.
Girls Inc. is truly a special place. When you walk into the center, you immediately notice that each and every girl at Girls Inc. has been poured into. The women at Girls Inc. do such a fantastic job at investing in every girl. You also notice the bond and friendship between the girls in each class. What a wonderful organization!
It has been an honor and joy for our company to be involved with Girls Inc. over the years. Lots of Eagle Eye employees have used VTO (Volunteer Time Off) hours to help out with Girls Inc.’s after school program and other events the organization hosts each year. There are two huge events for Girls Inc.:
- Father Daughter Banquet – This is such a fun event! It typically takes place in February of each year. Dads from all over the Wiregrass have the opportunity to take their daughters out for a fancy date night at the Dothan Civic Center. A meal is served first, then girls are invited to the dance floor for a wonderful time of dancing and fellowship. The details for the 2019 Father Daughter Banquet have not yet been released. Stay tuned to Girls Inc.’s website!
- Mother Daughter Tea – This is another fun event! It typically takes place in December each year. This event is designed to stimulate, honor, and enhance the positive relationships between girls and the women (mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and special friends) in their lives. There is always a tea style lunch served and numerous Christmas themed crafts and activities. The details for the 2019 Mother Daughter Tea have not yet been released. Stay tuned to Girls Inc.’s website!
