Outreach Weeks: Wiregrass Habitat for Humanity

“Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.”

Each year, we set aside several weeks during the month of October that we like to call our “Outreach Weeks”. This year, we have been shining a spotlight on several non-profits, and ministries throughout the Wiregrass area. Today we are finishing our Outreach Weeks with the Wiregrass Habitat for Humanity.

About Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is not just happening here in Dothan – it is an international organization. This organization was founded in Americus, Georgia in the year 1976. Habitat for Humanity operates around the globe and has helped build, renovate, and repair more than 600,000 decent, affordable houses sheltering more than 3 million people. Our Wiregrass Habitat for Humanity began in 1990. It was formed by Verna Saliba and the late Sharon Paxton. These two neighbors found that they shared a passion for our community and an interest in the Habitat for Humanity movement that was sweeping the nation. They ended up gathering members of the Wiregrass community together and forming the first board of directors for the Wiregrass affiliate of Habitat for Humanity.

Since the Wiregrass Habitat for Humanity began in 1990, they have built 127 homes and housed more than 400 individuals. WOW! This is absolutely wonderful, but the organization says, “the need is great and our mission is clear”. This quote signifies that the Wiregrass Habitat for Humanity will not stop serving anytime soon.

About The ReStore

Have you ever stopped by the Wiregrass Habitat for Humanity ReStore? If not, you must make plans to stop by there soon. The ReStore recently moved locations. It is now located on 2086 Montgomery Highway, Dothan, AL 36303. The new location is just across the street from where they used to be. This new space offers them more space and a new look.

The ReStore’s mission is these three words: Reduce! Reuse! Recycle!. What exactly can you expect to find at the ReStore? You can find good quality building materials at greatly reduced prices! The money from the ReStore goes to support the housing ministry of Wiregrass Habitat for Humanity. The ReStore’s hours are as follows: Thursdays (9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), Fridays (9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), and Saturdays (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.). Make sure that you stop by the ReStore one day when you are driving down Montgomery Highway.
