Roadmap to Wiregrass Area School Openings

Ready or not, it is almost time for back to school season! Throughout the state, there have been different announcements when it comes to the return to classes in the Fall. We have compiled our Roadmap to the Wiregrass Area School Openings to determine what we know so far!

College Requirements

Troy University locations not in Troy will begin classes on August 10.

Troy University students in Troy begin classes August 12.

Auburn University and The University of South Alabama students begin classes on August 17.

The University of Alabama, University of Alabama Birmingham, and University of Alabama Huntsville students begin classes on August 19.

Colleges and Universities in Alabama are requiring all students who will be on campus in the Fall to be tested for COVID-19. There are 14 test locations throughout the state. For those students who are located out of state, there is the option to receive a self-administered test through the mail. Students who choose to be tested at other locations can send their test results into their school. Masks will be required for all students and faculty on campus when social distancing is not possible.

Local School Openings

According to Governor Ivey’s latest mandate, all students grade 2 through college will be required to wear masks at school. Schools are now in the process of meeting and adjusting their start times. Some schools are choosing to start their semesters back online before returning to in-person classes at a later date.

Tips for Wearing and Caring for Your Mask

  • Wash your hands before putting on your mask.
  • Put it over your nose and mouth and secure it under your chin.
  • Try to fit it snugly against the sides of your face.
  • When taking it off handle only by the ear loops or ties.
  • Fold the outside corners together, to avoid contamination.
  • Be careful to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth when removing and wash your hands immediately after removal.
  • Don’t forget to wash your mask regularly!

Experts suggest washing your cloth mask after every use. For those who only use their mask intermittently, washing after every couple of days is acceptable. It is important to note that washing insertable filters will reduce their effectiveness. Filters are more delicate than cloth masks, so hand washing filters is suggested when needed. Insertable filters for the most part are meant for one- time use, but again, it depends on how long you are wearing your mask.

Cloth masks usually have the option to be dried. However, keep in mind that drying your mask has the potential to shrink it, damage the elastic straps or nosepiece, and lose its shape. Best practices for cleaning your mask includes washing the mask in hot water with a detergent of your choice and air drying afterwards. When you are not wearing your mask you should always store it in a clean place.

When purchasing your mask be sure to read the special care instructions as they will differ depending on which mask you choose. For more information on face masks, check out our Face Mask 101 Guide.
